Metabolic

Metabolic Syndrome is an alarming health condition that is becoming more and more common. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every three people over the age of 20 in the United States has Metabolic Syndrome—a group of medical disorders that, when taken together, increases the risk of developing such chronic illnesses as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Metabolic Syndrome is characterized by the presence of three or more of the following factors:

  • Large waistline and high body fat percentage: for men, waist 40 inches or more, body fat 29 percent or more; for women, waist 35 inches or more, body fat 37 percent or more
  • High triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood): equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL
  • Low HDL (good) cholesterol: for men, fewer than 40 mg/dL; for women, fewer than 50 mg/dL
  • High blood pressure: equal to or greater than 130/85mmHg
  • High fasting blood sugar: equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL and hemoglobin A1C greater than 5.5

One of the reasons Metabolic Syndrome is becoming so prevalent is the rise in obesity among Americans. More than two thirds (68 percent) of American adults are overweight and more than one third (35.7 percent) are obese. (1) And our children are also afflicted—32 percent ages 2 to 19 are overweight and 17 percent are obese. (2)

Natural Healthcare Center’s Metabolic Fitness Program is designed to help you prevent, reduce, or reverse the factors that lead to Metabolic Syndrome.

Our six-month program is an integrative and interactive fitness, nutritional, and educational plan that delivers tremendous results.* It includes evidence-based detoxification protocols; anti-aging, antioxidant nutrition; food-elimination protocols; cancer-prevention protocols; immune-boosting protocols; proper weight-loss strategies; diabetes prevention; and cholesterol reduction—all under one umbrella. All of these protocols were developed by our clinical nutritionist, Dr. Oscar Coetzee, Ph.D., using evidence-based nutritional research from 15 years of clinical experience.

What does our Metabolic Fitness Program include?

1. Metabolic Exercise (High-Intensity Interval Training or HIIT) in a small-group setting led by Dr. Oscar Coetzee. This training protocol creates EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), which causes your body to burn calories long after your workout is completed. We use dumbbells, kettlebells, bands, and other equipment and perform fundamental exercises (squats, rows, presses, etc.) with sub-maximal weights at maximum intensity. (Three times per week.)

2. Individual Consultations with Dr. Coetzee to set goals that integrate personalized nutritional and exercise protocols and to track your progress. We review your blood work and body composition and discuss psychological aspects, including how to stay motivated. (Once a month.)

3. Group Educational Seminars led by Dr. Coetzee on current health-related topics with full PowerPoint presentations. The seminars look at healthcare from both sides, allopathic and holistic, and separate the myths from the facts. (Once a month.) Topics include:

  • Demystifying Diets & Weight Loss: Exposing the truth
  • Cholesterol & Type II Diabetes: How it can be prevented and controlled naturally
  • Autism, ADHD, ADD & Mental Health - Psychotropic/Psychiatric Drugs: The untold facts
  • GMO – Genetically Engineered Foods and the Health Risks: "The greatest human experiment"
  • FDA: Is the Food and Drug Administration protecting us?
  • Artificial Sweeteners & Additives: What are the dangers of consumption?
  • Vaccines: Are they safe? What is the controversial information out there? Pros/cons?
  • Cancer: Are there any other options? How can natural approaches tie into modern oncology?
  • Allergies: Why do so many kids have allergies now? What is the cause?
  • Autoimmune Disorders (Multiple Sclerosis, GI Tract Disorders, Celiac Disease, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease): Why are so many of these prevalent in our time?
  • Politics & Economics of Your Health: How much say do you really have in your own decisions?

Why six months?

It takes years to develop chronic conditions. Due to the biochemical mechanisms and detoxification pathways in the body, a quick fix is not possible. Nothing comes easy, and achieving optimal health and successful weight-loss maintenance takes dedicated work and an education that will help you develop lifelong practices. However, it is amazing how quickly the body responds when given the proper whole-food nutrients, exercise protocols, and immune-strengthening components.

What are some of the benefits of a metabolic style of training?

Our program delivers tangible results, including:

#1. Increased cardiovascular capacity
Studies have shown anaerobic exercise, such as HIIT, can increase V02 max (maximal oxygen consumption) beyond that experienced by exercisers following an aerobic program.
#2: Improved hormonal profile
Studies have shown that hormones that promote “lipolysis” (fat loss) increase as a result of high-intensity strength training. Strength training in general has been shown to help improve your hormonal profile, and metabolic training is arguably the best type of strength training to elicit the most powerful hormonal response.
#3: Serious calorie burn
A 30-minute metabolic training workout easily burns around 500 calories, but it also increases your metabolic rate from anywhere between 10 percent to 25 percent for up to 48 hours—with some studies showing an increase in metabolic rate for up to 72 hours. This “afterburn effect” equates to hundreds of extra calories, which over the course of a few workouts can make a significant difference. The metabolic effect of intense strength training is real and powerful.
